Being socially awkward and easily frustrated when people misunderstand her, Gus has a difficult time developing close interpersonal relationships. She frequently misunderstands social cues and believes women are hitting on her when they aren't and is completely oblivious when they are. And that's really saying something, because do you know who the other two are? Lang and Harry. Gus and Penny are former best friends who spent a lot of time together during the early days of Rooster's Rest and Rooster's Reef.
Penny and Gus gradually grew distant after Gus misinterpreted what she believed were romantic cues during their time together and was turned down when she asked Penny out. Tensions between them were later compounded when Gus' close friend, and the CEO of Nest Holdings , Petunia Brookshire , was ousted by Lang Buddha for undisclosed drama and Penny was promoted to the position as her replacement. Overtime Gus would forgive Penny for taking the position and they grew to be cordial again, with Gus often acting as a personal confidant to Penny when it came to interpersonal issues between employees at Rooster's Rest.
Penny was a major proponent of Gus interning and acting as security for Denzel Williams during his mayoral campaign and term in office.
I feel like this is a fever dream. Cara is Gus' ex-girlfriend. They met at Dean's World while Cara was working a booth for the Green Agricultural Company and eventually started hanging out together on the beach regularly while Cara was between shifts. Weeks later Cara would ask Gus out while they were on a hiking trip, but Gus' no drama lifestyle ended up clashing with some of Cara's melodramatic friends and co-workers from her second job at LSPI, a private investigator firm. On July 17th, while on a hiking trip, Cara asked Gus to be her girlfriend and Gus said yes.
Despite being enthusiastic about making things official, they'd functionally already been dating for several weeks and had already gone on multiple outings together. One day, while on a beach date with Gus, they spent some time snooping around some of the other yards in the neighborhood and Cara fell in love with a house at the end of the street. Unsure of whether Gus was going to be comfortable to move in together in the near future, Cara rushed to get a loan to buy it, despite Gus urging her to hold off.
