The delegation of 12 Lynchburgers will spend a week in the Parisian suburb, living with host families, soaking in the culture and making excursions to sites like Omaha Beach. The French city had a delegation here two years ago and is planning another visit next year. The two communities share a special connection because of their shared history in D-Day and the eventual liberation of Paris. For Ted Brenig, who is Jewish, the events of the war are intensely personal.
Born in Austria, he lost relatives to the Holocaust and eventually fled to Switzerland. It was a major event in history. Brenig, 85, has made several trips to France and is fluent in the language, but said he liked the idea of visiting again as part of the Sister City program. Later, the program was expanded to include Glauchau, Germany. The local delegation visiting Rueil-Malmaison will depart Tuesday and stay through Oct.
