Northern Ireland, west Scotland and northwest Wales have borne the brunt of Eowyn, while England will be struck today by up to 50mph wind. A top speed of 96mph was recorded today at Brizlee Wood, a grassy plain home to a Royal Air Force base in Northumberland.
The European Storm Forecast Experiment Estofex has issued a tornado warning for parts of the UK and gusts could reach mph around coastal areas in Ireland. Red warnings are the highest and rarest alert the weather service can issue. Of the two active today, one says that the coasts of Northern Ireland could be battered by mph winds until 2pm. Weather officials extended it this morning to cover most of Dumfries and Galloway.
Amber and yellow warnings are in place for wind in Scotland, cautioning that power outages, damaged buildings and travel disruption are likely. Two yellow warnings are active Sunday. One for 70mph winds lashing Wales, Northern Ireland and the west coast of England and Scotland and another for 70mm of rain soaking the southern half of England β including London. A large, very cold pool of air over parts of North America is generating a stark contrast in temperatures across the continent, creating deeper low-pressure systems.
