Sponsored By. When lake sturgeon were restocked in Big Stone Lake in , it was estimated that in five years' time, some of the fish could reach 30 inches in length.
Ten years later, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources fisheries office in Ortonville is hearing occasional reports from anglers of catching sturgeon approaching 60 inches in length. In a recent newsletter, he provided an update on the popular restocking program. Bauer reported that annual net surveys conducted by the local staff continue to turn up decent numbers of stocked fish. Each year since , with the exception of , the DNR has stocked approximately 4, seven-inch lake sturgeon.
The DNR estimates that about 44, fish have been stocked to date. The Ortonville fisheries staff monitors the sturgeon by conducting annual net surveys. The nets β with a standard two-inch mesh β are not large enough to catch the biggest of the sturgeon out there, according to Bauer. The crew hopes to use larger-meshed nets in the years going forward to better monitor the population of the larger sturgeon.
They know some big ones are roaming the bottom of Big Stone Lake and beyond. The local crew continues to hear angler reports about the fish. Some angler reports indicate that some of the fish are migrating upstream and downstream of Big Stone Lake.
A few have been reported in the Pomme de Terre River near Morris, some 60 miles away. What also is evident is that lake sturgeon in Big Stone Lake have grown relatively fast when compared to other populations in the state, Bauer wrote.
