That having been said, once the necessary coping skills have been developed to deal with a problem effectively, it is not uncommon for clients to want to do deeper work in order to determine why they seem to face the same problems in life over and over again.
However, recognizing, acknowledging, and changing the assumptions, beliefs, and values we bring to our relationships that continue to lead to problems can take a significant amount of time, as does building the communication skills, trust, and intimacy necessary to make a relationship a success. Having facilitated diversity training groups, helped parents of different ethnicities learn effective parenting skills, and led dream workshops for culturally diverse individuals, I have learned that people explore various possibilities and life paths according to the way they perceive the world around them.
Accordingly, I always strive to help clients incorporate the qualities of their unique experiences into their daily lives and learn from those experiences. When a trauma occurs, the pictures, sounds, thoughts, and feelings of the experience often become locked in our nervous systems.
