The 5th International LII Workshop provides a forum for open high-level discussion on the understanding of LII diagnostics and to foster relationships in joint research. Leading researchers, engineers, officials, students and others are invited to attend and participate for a successful outcome of the workshop. Laser-induced incandescence LII has proven to be a powerful tool for particle concentration and particle size measurements in combustion, particle synthesis, as well as in environmental applications.
However, different experimental approaches and data evaluation techniques exist which, while demonstrating the complexity of the physical processes involved in LII and the need for further research, has also somewhat hampered the acceptance by industry of LII as a measurement standard. In order to strengthen the community and to explore the development of a series of best practices for LII modeling, experiments, and data interpretation, a series of workshops was initiated in Duisburg, Germany , followed by workshops in Bad Herrenalb, Germany , Ottawa, Canada and Varenna, Italy These meeting were highly successful with differences in models reduced and some best practices in experimental methods demonstrated.
The Fifth International LII Workshop will combine contributed technical presentations, related to the scientific development of Laser-Induced Incandescence modeling, experiments, data interpretation, and coupling with other techniques, with organized discussions on the current best practices and challenges facing LII as a measurement standard for particulate aerosols.
The conference is open to submissions on emerging issues related to LII and its establishment as a measurement standard. The submissions should not cover applications of standard LII but focus on aspects related to the measurement technique. Potential topics are:.
Attendees of the workshop are encouraged to provide their input to the development they have observed and they have contributed to. The results are to be compared and discussed during the workshop and future research directions and scientific challenges will be discussed on this basis. The workshop will feature organized discussions related to the key areas of experimental techniques, modeling approaches, materials properties and model assumptions.
