As a non-native species, their effect on the wild areas they inhabit is a complex one, but they have also been here for hundreds of years and are as much a part of the landscape as people. And when a newborn horse falls into a hidden stream, she was lucky there was someone nearby to save her.
The foal was only a few hours old when her rescuer pulled her out of the icy stream in Kosciuszko National Park in New South Wales, Australia. The district is known for its alpine sports and rocky landscapes, as well as its roaming population of feral brumbies, or wild horses. Though the creature was a wild animal and she knew it was best to keep her distance , she could not stand by and watch the tiny animal drown.
Soon after birth, newborn foals are very unsteady on their legs, and this one just happened to stumble in the wrong direction. There were still bits of afterbirth stuck to her body when she fell into the stream. Then they watched as I picked her up and gave her back to them. Afterwards, she worried that the poor baby would die from the cold, but the rest of the herd formed a ring of protection around her as she rested after her ordeal, sleeping and nursing to regain her strength.
