Archaeological investigations of the agrarian communities of the 6 th-2 nd millennia BC in the Iberian Peninsula have undergone fundamental transformations over the past 25 years. This paper attempts to provide an overview of this research by considering three topics: 1 changes in theory, perspective, and practice, 2 the discovery of new sites or site types, and 3 developments in analytical methodologies and techniques.
It concludes with some thoughts about possible future challenges and directions for research. The construction of a new port terminal to the north of Horta Bay, on Faial Island, between and , included the modification of a m2 submerged area, through the construction of a m long dock and the dredging of a manoeuvring basin. This project was preceded by an Environmental Site Assessment ESA , which resulted in the definition of several mitigation measures, implemented before, during and after the construction works β the survey, excavation and removal of previously discovered archaeological materials and the monitoring of the dredging works.
This paper presents the strategies used in the different phases of the archaeological work. The current Cano de Sancti Petri and the marshlands connected with this main salty-stream would have played an important role as a major economic scenario in the southern part of Cadiz Bay regarding the maritime trafic and trade and the exploitation of marine resources. Our most recent efforts have been focused on the Roman site of Coto de la Isleta Chiclana.
The review of the material culture and building remains uncovered due to the coastal erosive process has revealed the existence of an industrial Roman settlement linked to the production of sh by-products dating from mid-1st c. BC to the late 1st c.
