Throughout the One Year War , Amuro's mental stress and his growing Newtype powers distance him further away from the crew members of the White Base. As the war progressed, he begins to lose many people he had cherished, most importantly Lalah Sune , which he could telepathically communicate with. At the end of the war, Amuro realizes that the crew of the White Base is the family he belongs to. Due to his guilt over accidentally killing Lalah, Amuro also has a fear of going into outer space, as noted by Mirai Noa.
However, Fraw Bow manages to re-ignite his fighting spirit to help the crew of the Argama during their time on Earth. By the Second Neo Zeon War , Amuro has grown into much more of a leader, willing to sacrifice himself for a brighter and more hopeful future. Amuro has a certain knack for mechanics, including building the famous talking ball shaped robot named Haro. On board the first mobile suit he piloted, the RX Gundam , he is able to use and fight with it by just looking in the piloting manual for the first time, and destroyed two Zakus at the same time.
However, he initially lacks the piloting skills to fend off aces such as his main rival Char Aznable and Ramba Ral , mostly relying on the superior power of the Gundam. However, over time, Amuro hones his skills to the point where the Gundam needed a field upgrade and tuned to even able to match up to his immense piloting skill. Amuro is adept at mobile suit combat in all ranges and can handle multiple enemies at once, with his exploits in the RX Gundam earning him the title of "White Devil".
Amuro is also shown to be pragmatic and employed clever tactics in battles, often catching his enemies off guard, such as the feint he used against Gyunei. Amuro never saw his mother again until the One Year War, and it is suggested that she did not write or contact him otherwise, though Amuro maintained his affection for her.
Amuro befriended Fraw Bow sometime prior to On what seemed an ordinary day in Side 7 on September 18, U. However, while they were in the shelter, there was a series of explosions.
