A former Menomonee Falls teacher charged Tuesday with sexually assaulting a year-old student told investigators she knew that the boy was underage, but that the relationship was mutual and that the two had "very strong feelings for each other," according to criminal complaint filed in Waukesha County Circuit Court.
April M. Novak, 30, of Sussex faces 12 felony counts of sexual assault of a student by school staff. Court Commissioner Laura Lau ordered her to have no unsupervised contact with anyone under the age of 18, including her own children. According to the complaint, Novak is accused of engaging in sexual intercourse and oral sex with the teen in her classroom numerous times since mid-October. The boy told investigators that the two had agreed not to tell anyone about their sexual relationship.
According to a biography that has since been removed from the district's website, Novak was a reading teacher and literacy coach at the high school. A district spokeswoman said she had been employed there since August and had worked previously in the Brown Deer School District.
Novak has degrees from Marian University and Concordia University in Mequon, according to the biography. Authorities began investigating the allegations Dec. District Superintendent Pat Greco announced last week that an investigation was underway and that Novak, who was not identified at the time, was placed on administrative leave and then resigned.
