Nobody calls with good news at this time of night, do they? This is the sort of hour when you learn of loss or disaster. I tell the girl to stay exactly where she is.
A rise in youngsters caught with weapons in recent years has increased anxiety amongst parents. I pause. My instinct is to lay down the law. I want to tell her to do as I say. I know better. For one thing - and some of you may recognise this - telling a year-old to do something is a rookie error.
It rarely goes well. What a damned hypocrite I am. What a daftie, that boy was. Accepting this fact does not ease my worry. I assume the worst. The illogical part of my brain begins to dominate. I fail to reassure myself. I get, maybe, two hours sleep. Deeply disturbing new figures show that children as young as 10 have been caught carrying weapons by police stop-and-search teams. Between April and September last year, unders were found in possession of a weapon. Among them were a year old caught with a blade, a year-old found carrying a gun, and a number of year-old carrying weapons and illegal drugs.
These findings are shocking, indeed. Clearly, something has gone terribly wrong when a year-old not only wants to carry a firearm but is able to obtain one. But in contrast to shocking cases like that one is the behaviour of the vast majority of our children.
