Nancy Hennessy: You're welcome. I'm pleased to have the opportunity to talk with you about something that I care so much about. Nancy Hennessy: I began teaching a number of years ago. I came into teaching via the regular education classroom. I spent some years in that setting and kept thinking about students that I was interacting with who weren't successful and what other route I might take that would allow me to meet their needs.
I made a decision to go back to school to study the area of learning disabilities, special education. At the same time I began to look for an opportunity to work in the special education classroom and ultimately, ended up in a middle school with adolescent boys. I was greatly disappointed that I wasn't able to work with them in a confident way and that really made me think about where I might find some answers to working with children who weren't learning how to read.
