Our house was nestled in the woods, town was a fifteen-minute drive past chickens and cornfields, and, like everyone else in our sprawling county, I attended the solitary, large public high school. Built in the seventies, it sat on the outskirts of a town of two thousand and was surrounded by more woods and cornfields.
Overall, my status in high school was lowly. I was a top student, sure, but I barely spoke, kept my head down, and ate at the leftover lunch table.
The popular kids formed the usual cliques: preps, jocks, self-described rednecks. As for me? I tried to pass as a prep, but kids are sharp and can spot a fake quickly.
Even then, though, I felt like a fraud. On my own, I never fit in. Reflecting now, more than thirty years later, I realize that all of us were probably confused, lost, or scared, seeking belonging.
