I know that the latter served in the Scots Guards at Tel-el-Kebir but was childless. Collateral branch? Captain Robert Frederick Balfour is from the Balbirnie branch. Thank you. I thought as much. I didn't think that this Balfour joining such a bue blooded Regiment like the Scots Guards was not somehow unrelated. I wondered who had bought that sword, when I saw the price had been reduced I sent off an email about it.
Good to know it's gone to a good home. Does anyone have an account of how Balfour met his death? I think with due respect that tempaire made a slight mistake; he was 1st Battalion as 2nd Batt.
What an unfortunate way to die; reminds me of the last scene in the 's movie version of All Quiet on the Western Front. Thanks very much for that. Where can I get the downlod for the war dairy for this battalion between when they landed until the end of the year please? This extract from the Battalion diary came from a posting by Northern Soul on this Forum under "Soldiers" several years ago. There seems to be a gap from the end of September to the second week of October.
Hopefully someone will have the diary entries from 4 November to end of December and may be able to clarify what company Captain Balfour was in. Horses arrived early morning. For Southampton in two trains. Battalion complete with vehicles but without horses. Disembarked and marched to Camp nr. Horses which were left behind when battalion embarked arrived at about 11 a.
