A man who threw bleach in a bus driver's face in front of horrified passengers has narrowly avoided jail. Barry Mason, 67, attacked and beat the driver and damaged the Perspex guard and flooring during the savage attack on June He was handed an eight-week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, reports the Hull Daily Mail.
At Hull Magistrates Court last week, Mason pleaded guilty to assaulting the driver, assault by beating and criminal damage. Magistrates chose to hand Mason, of Estcourt Street, east Hull, a custodial sentence because the offence was so serious.
However it will be suspended. Acid and other noxious substance attacks have been in the news recently with a significant rise across the country. New judicial guidelines have been introduced which means criminals caught with acid can expect to receive the same prison sentences as those convicted of carrying a knife.
Public concern has been mounting in London after a spate of acid attacks, some of which have caused serious injuries and disfigurement.
