The last day of a long trip. Unfortunately I have to be back at work soon and I have a return flight booked. But I was at least going to make the most of this day. First I headed north from Zurich towards Schaffhausen. Eventually I made it to Eglisau and with it, the Rhine. Due to the strange way the borders run along here, I needed to cross through a short section of Germany to get to Schaffhausen.
Although I suspect I would have been able to pay with Swiss francs too, I kept going nevertheless and shortly afterwards crossed back into Switzerland. Almost straight away I arrived at the Rheinfall, a massive waterfall. After a quick boat trip to the big rock in the middle of the falls I was absolutely starving and headed into Schaffhausen for lunch.
Schaffhausen has a very nicely preserved old town, despite being bombed by the Americans in WWII when they mistook it for a German town. After lunch I followed the rhine east towards Lake Constance.
There are all sorts of enclaves along the way and I kept going back and forth between Germany and Switzerland all the way through. Just before Stein am Rhein my little speedo indicated that I hit the km mark since Amsterdam. Stein am Rhein is right where the Rhine meets Lake Constance and that too is an extraordinarily pretty town, if somewhat full of tourists.
After Stein am Rhein I did a 90 degree turn and headed south. I found a bunch of great bike tracks going through some lovely towns and forests, all the way to Frauenfeld. Although some of them seemed to be reserved for tanks onlyβ¦. After Frauenfeld I decided to take the main road straight to Sirnach.
