A manhunt is underway in Craven County, North Carolina, after authorities say a man escaped from a detention center. Detention Center officers said at 4 p. Sunday they found John Matthew Nigh missing from his cell. They said a search determined that Nigh, assisted by his two cellmates, had removed a ceiling grating, entered a utility ceiling chase, and exited the roof through a ventilation housing.
Authorities said the cellmates concealed his escape by stuffing a mattress, making it appear that he was sleeping in his cell. The U. Nigh has been armed in past encounters with law enforcement officers and should be considered dangerous. They said he has a tattoo with "JMN" on his upper left arm, and a cross on his upper right arm.
